Michael Alan

Michael Alan was born in New York City. A much respected figure in urban subculture, Alan has already established a name for himself as one of the most recognized New York City graffiti artists, writing since the late 1980s.

At age eighteen he opened his own night club where he curated underground art events through New York City for ten years. He also released a performance art album in 1997 and organized a collaborative album in 2004. With a strong music and singing background, Alan's main attention lies in his visual arts.

Alan is a hybrid abstractionist. Crossbreeding many techniques and a broad range of drawing capability he builds intricate and elaborate worlds where unique characters question religion, science and the divine order. The intensity, unique marks and intellectual quality of his drawings, paintings and mixed media establish their own unique language. The world and character structure reads on multiple levels with grotesque, humorous and emotional figures surrounded by highly detailed people and objects that can be unearthed with a magnifying glass.

Michael Alan's art work has been seen on the front page of the New York Times, cover of Elemental magazine with an eight page story and published in over fifty magazines including the Source, XL and Yellow Rat Bastard. Alan has also been featured in numerous videos, films and print ads. He has exhibited his work worldwide with solo shows in Chelsea, the Lower East Side and Berlin and group shows in New York City, Philadelphia, Hamburg and Barcelona.
